An Individualized Approach to Health Care

Gail Zimmerman, M.D. is a Board-Certified Internist trained at Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons, and New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Over the years, she has developed a uniquely personalized approach to health care. Combining the best of traditional and contemporary approaches, Dr. Zimmerman practices state-of the-art medicine with the touch of a small-town family doctor -- one patient at a time.

She believes that patients deserve more than the standard 10-minute appointment. She is also responsive to the growing acceptance of non-traditional medicine and she employs natural remedies and chiropractic/ acupuncture referrals where appropriate. It is this training and philosophical approach which ties together a number of different areas in which she specializes.

As an internist I treat patients with a tremendous variety of complaints, acute and chronic illnesses, and medical and emotional problems such as hypertension, cholesterol problems, sinusitis, and depression. I have a unique background in that I was a practicing therapist with a Masters in Social Work, I was trained at one of the top medical schools in the country and I am committed to the concept of preventive medicine. With this background I am able to treat the entire patient. Comprehensive physical exams are a cornerstone of my practice and help insure that nothing that can be identified early is missed.

Many people do not know what an internist is or what makes us different from general practitioners. If you are interested in learning more, click here.

Recent medical research has supported the conviction that how we choose to live our lives -the food we eat, the amount of exercise we do, the care we take to minimize stress - substantially affects our susceptibility to disease and strongly influences the level of our strength and vitality as we age.

In addition to treating acute illnesses and chronic conditions, I work closely with my patients to develop a strategy of preventive medicine. Through frank discussion, I help patients recognize lifestyle habits they have the power to change, and come up with a plan of action for nutrition, exercise and stress management and/or weight reduction. I make sure that patients follow the recommendations of the American Academy of Physicians and are up to date with routine preventative screenings such as colonoscopy, mammography, bone densitometry and testing for glaucoma.

My approach will help you understand where you currently stand medically and help you understand the things you can do to improve your chances for a vital and healthy life.

Whether or not to treat menopause is an extremely personal decision and thankfully, there are a number of viable options available. Through consultation and careful review of family history, I help the women in my practice make decisions they can live with, both physically and emotionally.

As one of only seven menopause practitioners certified by the North American Menopause Society, I have years of experience treating the symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause. I regularly lecture and attend conferences that keep me up to date on the latest research and the continually changing recommendations for treatment.

I work with both individuals and groups to help take weight off – and keep it off – through the only way that has been proven to work in the long term: changing long-standing behavioral patterns related to appetite management, eating and physical activity.

I help promotes slow, incremental change to your attitudes and lifestyle – in practical and palatable steps you can live with. In the group setting you’ll also have the emotional support of like-minded individuals who share your goals, and the guidance of a nutritionist/psychologist and an exercise physiologist, who work under my direction.

The group program is 12 weeks long. Each 90 minute session features education, demonstration, group discussion, goal setting, and an interactive exercise segment. Our goal is for you to acquire the understanding, support network and motivation you need to implement change in your life!

SECOND OPINIONS (in Plain English)

No question, it’s both alarming and daunting get a diagnosis you never wanted to hear for an illness you feel you don’t know enough about. There’s not only the stress factor of knowing something’s wrong, but also so much to learn: new medical terminology, names of treatments and approaches and often, different therapy options as well. The effect can be dizzying, and I frequently see patient who feel they’re in “information overload” – trying to sort it out. I routinely see patients seeking out a second opinion, and work in a spirit of partnership with other physicians. Through my ongoing professional relationships with colleagues at top New York Hospitals, I can also make any appropriate referrals.
